"The occlusion (or bite) defines the end point of the body with respect to the plantar surfaces of the feet, and within these two boundaries, all functional spaces for physiologic processes must be accommodated."
CAN YOU REALLY CORRECT TMJ DYSFUNCTION?
YES!! However, the vital first step is calledCranio-Cervical Mandibular Registration and it is an advanced and multidisciplinary form of JAW REGISTRATION.
There are dozens, if not hundreds of approaches to mandible registration processes, but only one that incorporates our unique technology and reference points which considers full-body neurological as well as structural reference points.
"Jaw registration" refers to a process or procedure in clinical TMJ treatment protocols and occlusal therapy which establishes a "desirable position" of the lower jaw with respect to the upper jaw and the jaw joints. In the TMJ treatment world, this important first step is thought not only to be able to produce some therapeutic benefit if established correctly, but is also thought to be at the heart of many failed or unsuccessful TMJ treatment protocols.
The reason for failure is complex, but centers around the central challenge of coaxing the jaw position into a measurable point in space that is in harmony with the facial muscles and a few cervical or neck muscles, rather than a full body comprehensive approach that is maximally balanced and in complete harmony with head, neck, shoulders, arms and trunk, along with all of their respective functions and positions--or, in other words, their muscles, joints, nerves, vessels and lymphatics as well as their motion and postural aspects.
Finding a correct jaw position that is in harmony with the entire body form and function has been elusive to the field of dentistry alone. Dr. Chapman has developed a revolutionary method of "Jaw Registration" which involves the re-positioning Cranio-Cervical Junction (CCJ) through a protocol developed by Dr. Chapman which utilizes the Atlas Orthogonal Instrument developed by Dr. Roy and Dr. Matthew Sweat to reduce the Atlas Subluxation through a procedure known as Transdermal Atlas Positioning, or (TAP). The process is complex and multidisciplinary. Special imaging and analysis protocols are required. Stereotaxic analysis is obtaind through Large Field of View (FOV) Cone Beam CT scanning, and is the basis of the craniocervical analysis of the Cranio-Cervical Junction (CCJ), the numerical 3D description of the atlas subluxation as well as upper airway, sinus and occlusal metrics. True 3D imaging, along with other key technologies which measure occlusal and plantar forces are incorporated into our unique Cranio-Cervical Mandibular Registration process.
Because the human body has immense adaptive powers, and is adept at compensating for imbalances in the upper cervical spine (atlas joint) and the occlusal system, a full body De-compensating Model is fundamental to correcting the imbalances in the complex human functional framework known as the Cranio-Cervico-Mandibular System.
Accurately and precisely positioning the atlas utilizing the TAP protocol is fundamental to the TMJ treatment procedure. Having performed the TAP procedure on many thousands of new patients, we are convinced it is the most effective FULL SPINAL DECOMPENSATION MODEL (SDM) in the realm of structural or functional medicine today. The SDM utilizes biomimetic dental orthotic technologies to support, facilitate and enhance the full anatomical decompensation affect over time, while addressing and correcting the most common causes that underlie harmful parafunctional habits such as bruxism and clenching.
IN A NUTSHELL:
The C1 corrective procedure (TAP) is used to decompensate the body. A biomimetic appliance or other suitable initial appliance is used because a precisely designed and fabricated oral orthotic can directly influence the entire body, not just the jaw joints. Any oral appliance will reinforce the position of the mandible and maxilla, and hence, will affect the Cranio-Cervical Junction, (CCJ) thereby affecting the entire cervical spine. If the cervical spine is adversely affected, the entire body will start a compensational process. The appropriately designed and fabricated appliance will facilitate a proprioceptive "retraining" of the cranio-cervico-mandibular structures in context with an optimized full body posture.
In essence, a properly designed and adjusted oral appliance has been found to help stabilize the optimized full body position. It is our experience that the two procedures become mutually reinforcing, enhancing our patients ability to hold there proper atlas alignment whilst improving sleep architecture, bite posture and general health. This is why we refer to this biomimetic process as Atlas Orthodontics.
Doctor Christopher Chapman is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic and is a Board Certified Chiropractic Physician. He is Board Certified in the Atlas Orthogonal Procedure. He serves as Adjunct Faculty - Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa and is an instructor for the BYU Internship Program for pre-medical, pre-chiropractic, pre-dental undergraduate students. He serves as Multidisciplinary Chair for the Prestigious Sweat Institute in Atlanta, GA. He is a certified instructor for the basic four modules for the Atlas Orthogonal Certification Program. He lectures nationally to a multidisciplinary audience of dentists, chiropractors and allied health professionals on the subject of the atlas subluxation complex, the biomechanical effect atlas subluxation has on the craniofacial and dental system, sleep breathing disturbances and TMJ disorders. He co-teaches a course on co-management of malocclusion and atlas subluxation in a clinical setting. He has lectured for Biomodeling Solutions, The Sweat Institute, Arrowhead Laboratories, and has been a regular guest on A healthier Your Radio, a national health radio program hosted by David and Fawn Christopher . He is a regular presenter for Biomodeling Solutions Webinar Series and has presented original research and material on the combined morbidities of atlas subluxation and malocclusion. He is a current member of the UCPA and the ICA, and is enrolled in the Upper Cervical Procedures Diplomate Program.
Presently, Dr. Chapman directs the only clinic in the United States that uses proprietary biomimetic appliances, assessment technologies, including advanced imaging along side proprietary dental protocols to provide the essential long lasting correction of unstable craniocervical instability also known as atlas subluxation. The proprietary clinical protocols identify and focus on correcting the root-cause of the harmful "parafunction" often associated with TMJ disorders, such as clenching, teeth grinding, temporal and masseter muscle pain--and some of the objective findings such as tori formation, decrease volume of the upper airway, excessive teeth wear, exostoses and provides craniocervical correction and the essential occlusal support for the reduction and stabilization of the craniocervical mandibular, occlusal and temporamandibular structures.
Dr. Chapman's articles and papers appear in the NUCCA Upper Cervical Monograph, text books on The Atlas Vertebral Subluxation Complex, The School of Natural Healing news letters and most recently several articles published on the combined affect of Atlas Orthogonal adjustment and the use of a biomimetic oral appliance in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research.

"The teeth are the gears
of the body--they dictate and the jaw accommodates. The jaw can then pull or push the upper cervical spine into stressed positions as it accommodates a bad bite "

Though no longer with us, Dr. Myles Preble, DMD, served as an important part of our clinical team. He participated in the implementation and utilization of neuromuscular and dental protocols including the K7 Myotronics electro-diagnostics for the stabilization and treatment of painful TMJ degenerative conditions. While our procedure has advanced beyond the technology of Myotronics and neurouscular appliances alone and the concepts of an “optimized bite”, we are ever grateful for his contribution and participation and the care of our patients. He graduated from Washington University Dental School in 1983 and joined American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry 1987.
Dr. Danny White is a graduate of Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Brigham Young University, where he focused on entrepreneurship, law, and the pre-health sciences. Utilizing this unique background he founded the law firm, Credit Attorney, PC, where he served as president and general manager for several years. He also served as the managing member for Total Marketing Group, LLC and as a consultant for Progrexion Marketing, Inc., the marketing arm of Lexington Law Firm.
It was through an unlucky experience with traditional orthodontics as an adult that inspired Dr. White to transfer his focus to oral healthcare. After searching for a better way to provide quality patient care, he studied Biomimetic Dentistry under the tutelage of Dr. David Alleman for 5 years. It was his biomimetic dental mentor, Dr. David Alleman who introduced Dr. White to Dr. Chapman's methods and clinic where he was exposed to Dr. Chapman's unique protocols which Dr. Chapman had developed using Atlas Orthogonal craniocervical reduction technologies in combniation with custom designed occlusal appliance technologies. Dr. White became a patient, and found that his chronic neck pain for which he has seen numerous chiropractors--sometimes up to three times per day--was resolved with the first image guided Transdermal Atlas Positioning procedure. With his Biomimetic Dentistry background combined with his keen interest and understanding and first hand experience of the Transdermal Atlas Positioning technologies and occlusal support concepts such as holistic biological dentistry and advanced biomimetic occlusal technologies, he saw the clear connection. As someone who understands the vital relationship between function and form, it is his philosophy that a conservative and holistic approach to healing is the key to optimal overall health. His chair-side manner and dental touch are genuinely top-tier. Patients leave his chair--even for extended complex treatment sessions--without pain, with an authentic sense of having been cared for expertly and with a smile.
He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. DeVore is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic and is a Board Certified Chiropractic Physician. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Fitness and Wellness from Brigham Young University, where he focused on rehabilitative and functional exercise, as well as nutrition. While studying at BYU, Dr. DeVore completed an internship under the directorship of Dr. Chapman before matriculating to Palmer College of Chiropractic where he completed doctoral studies. As a teenager, Dr. DeVore became convinced of the power of precision atlas adjusting after suffering a diving injury. Under upper cervical care, he was able to experience first-hand the healing affect of adjusting the Atlas bone as a precise and gentle way of bringing the body upright and restoring natural balance and funciton. Dr. DeVore has had many patients travel nationally to seek his clinical expertise.
Dr. DeVore was selected out of several impressive candidates to become a Clinical and Research Associate at the Chapman Clinic for Spinal and Craniofacial Epigenetics--the only clinic in the world that combines the healing power of Transdermal Atlas Positioning and occlusal support concepts where protocols for holistic biological dentistry, neuromuscular, biomimetic dentistry and advanced biomimetic occlusal technologies are combined to solve complex and chronic health problems. Dr DeVore is an outstanding associate. He has developed his diagnostic and treatment skills to the proficiency levels attained by doctors with many more years in practice. With an emphasis on administration and flow stucture, Dr. DeVore has been instrumental in implementing flow structure to our office and is a valuable part of our medical and administrative team.
