Home Remedies for TMJ Pain

Pain in the upper jaw, also called TMJ disorder, can be a real problem. However, if your TMJ pain is minor, there are some things you can do to alleviate the pain on your own:

  • Using over-the-counter pain medication
  • Changing diet to softer foods
  • Avoiding chewing gum
  • Using a heat/ice pack
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Sleepign on your side
  • Being mindful of jaw clenching and teeth grinding
  • Using therapeutic exercises

Also, the TMJ association recommends being extra careful of any activities that may cause your jaw be over-exerted such as going to the dentist. Make sure that you are aware of any activity that leads to repetitive jaw movement. It’s important to keep in mind that these home TMJ remedies can help, but they are not guaranteed to be effective. If pain does not improve or worsens, it may be time to see a specialist.
